In his 26 years with ACR Health, Wil Murtaugh has served in the roles of Director of Development, Deputy Executive Director, and is currently serving as the Executive Director. Wil has largely contributed to community programs and led various initiatives to make health services more accessible. He has been particularly instrumental in helping those affected by HIV and AIDS. Wil participated in a group coaching program in order to refine his leadership skills and learn key strategies to effectively communicate with employees.
What is Empathic Leadership?
“The ability to identify and comprehend others' situations, feelings, and perspectives by imaginatively walking in their shoes.”
What skills or competencies did you enhance through the coaching process?
“To be able to determine a person's Extended DISC area (behavioral style) and how best to communicate with them. How to read a room and respond correctly. To decide what DISC area I want to present with and what is required in the meeting. Understanding my own DISC rating and how it has changed and learning how to deal with coworkers.”
Share an example of a goal that you have realized as a result of coaching.
“I used to give too much information in answering questions, now I write out 3 main points to every questions, especially at Board Meetings. This has cut down tremendously on any confusion or the need for questions.”
What do professionals need to start anticipating as the change needed to be a strong leader?
“How a coworker likes to communicate and receive their information. To be able to make the final decision and not make people wait. Always have the goals in site.”
