Coach Sgro suggests this playlist of amazing songs that are aligned to some of the best spiritual, emotional, and empowerment practices. The words and titles make up so many of the matras that we teach in our coaching and training.
This particular playlist is curated in order that it should be heard and understood. This is not exhaustive list but an intentional experiential journey to self-manage, build affective skills, emotionally regulate and create a positive outlook.
Most of the selected works our sung by women, as it has been our most recent history that women have openly explored their feelings through song and narrative. For too long we have labeled female entertainment or music as "chick flicks" or "too girlie" and meanwhile, the empathy development that has been engendered, is something too many men have missed as an opportunity to learn and grow for themselves.
As seen in the movie, The Color Purple, we find Shug Avery finding peace with her father through the healing powers of music and song. Coach Sgro's favorite book and movie of all time is The Color Purple, for it is through our discomfort and hardships that we develop our strength to be our own superhero. Our human condition is essential to thrive.
To take this playlist to the next level, listen to each song in order. After each one, jot down a few key lyrics or feelings that that were stirred or awakened. What were the themes across the music? Did you become uncomfortable or empowered? What did your discomfort or empowerment reveal? Note that discomfort is the birthplace of learning.
Take what you learned and create a set of seven core values that you took away from the journey and find ways to practice and live those values daily. What we believe, is how we behave. If you complete this exploration, we would love to hear your core values and which songs resonated in your learning.
